HISTORY

In the late 1950s a group of sensitive and visionary Gujaratis living in Delhi came together and founded the Gujarat Education Society with a view to establish an institution commemorating the memory of our great national leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.  Thus came into being Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in the heart of New Delhi.

In 1960-61, the Vidyalaya came up with the innovative idea of adopting a village where the students could go at regular intervals for social service.  The Vidyalaya, therefore, started taking them to Mandi, a small village on the southern outskirts of Delhi,  initially to acquaint the students with rural life.  In 1972, the Society started  ‘Mandi Centre’ with the dual objectives of improving the quality of life in the village by rendering suitable fiscal and physical assistance (Shramdaan) and providing an opportunity for the students of  Sardar Patel Vidyalaya to learn to serve society.

When the Mandi Centre was established, Mandi was a backward and poor village having no road links and even potable water supply.  However, over the years some social and economic changes have taken place in and around Mandi and the population also grown.  One of these changes was the conversion of the Centre into Mandi Shishu Mandir, a Balwadi for the children of Mandi. With the growing demand for child literacy in the area,  this became Mandi Vidya Niketan, a school built with the help of Round Table India.  Today,  Mandi Vidya Niketan, since renamed as Sardar Patel Vidya Niketan, Mandi is a senior secondary school up to Class 12h,  provisionally recognized by the Directorate of Education, Govt. of NCT of Delhi and is also affiliated by CBSE and is fully managed by the Gujarat Education Society which caters to  ‘quality education’ needs of the children of Mandi and villages around.
